High school mathematics constitutes a unique challenge to many students. Students find the abstractions necessary for mathematics competency can be achieved more easily when they are able to investigate many, many examples. Graphing calculators facilitate these investigations.
Our high school is a large urban school in a diverse neighborhood.
A large percentage of our students are refugees, new to the country, and, in some cases, new to formal education. Their families are just becoming settled and are striving to secure housing and employment. There is not a lot of money left over for expensive school supplies such as graphing calculators! Our students are happy to be in the United States and eager to complete their education.
My Project
Students will be able to create, save and edit their math projects on these calculators, allowing them to reflect upon and refine their work. Research shows that students who reflect upon their work and make revisions based upon those reflections are more effective learners.
There is already a lot of content available for use with these calculators. This means that they can be deployed immediately, and students will benefit from their use as soon as they arrive.
As we strive to close the achievement gap, it is critical that our economically disadvantaged and ethnically diverse students have access to the same tools, instruction and curriculum that their suburban peers enjoy.
Funding this project will help to level the playing field for the benefit of these at-risk students.
