Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In a high school of almost 1500 students, more than half of our students qualify for free (or reduced-price) lunches and about 200 are English-language learners at various levels of English proficiency. Statistics class can be very challenging for high school students as well as adults. I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with interactive and meaningful learning experiences. These students want to be in school, because they want to learn, become successful, and be better prepared for college and career.
Over half of our students receive free or reduced-price lunches.
They dream of getting accepted into a good college. They deserve to have the best technology tools for learning throughout their school day, but they are not supplied with them. I want to make the learning in my classroom very hands-on and interactive for all of my students. Math education is best when learning is hands-on and the information will stick with them. My goal for all of my students is to inspire them to continue on a path of academic excellence. In order to make this successful, students need supplies to enhance their educational journey.
My Project
We are preparing our kids for college and career readiness in math class by using graphing calculators to allow students to do very complex calculations and show their work. In higher level math classes, this tool can be a gateway to college entrance and better careers. Students with access to these calculators use a wider range of problem-solving approaches.
Students tend to attempt more problems, use a wider range of problem-solving approaches, and obtain higher test scores than the students without access to graphing calculators.
We use many activities where graphing is an integral part of developing knowledge of statistics. These calculators will help my students learn these skills and be more efficient in their college level math class. By building toward a class set of graphing calculators, this will allow my students to use them as needed and prepare them for their future.
