My students are bright, dedicated students who have chosen to push themselves past the required math courses to learn math at the highest levels. In a school resounding with creative energy, they serve as an inspiration to the students who follow in their footsteps.
They are the next generation of artists, activists, and role models for our city.
As high school juniors, they are laying the foundation for a lifetime of learning. Throughout the school and throughout their communities, they are taking on increasing responsibilities every day.
My Project
Success in modern math courses requires fluent use of up to date technology. Half of my students have not had graphing calculators available to them over the course of their math careers and have not had the opportunity to see how a graphing calculator can help them to visualize and compare functions. When we're able to use graphing calculators in class, it allows students to confirm their intuitions. By plotting a quick graph of the material that they're analyzing they can see, for instance, when they should expect a function to have multiple solutions. This saves them time and builds up their confidence.
I will use the graphing calculators from this project to even the playing field for my students and make sure that ALL of my Pre-Calculus students have the opportunity to use these powerful tools on a daily basis.
By building this daily familiarity, my students will get the leg up that they need to succeed on their SATs this year and to prepare to take AP and college level math moving forward. Unlike online graphing systems, modern graphing calculators are allowed in testing situations and are an excellent way for all students, no matter their economic background, to thrive in a modern high stakes testing environment.
