Many students at our school have struggled in mathematics and do not see themselves as smart math students. When they join Advanced Placement Statistics they begin to see the usefulness of math. They realize that they will have career options involving math and feel empowered to use statistics toward social change.
Students at our school have chosen to participate in a rigorous mathematics program.
The school offers a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) program where all students take 4 years of math, science, and humanities, as well as 4 years of pathway classes that focus on Engineering, Computer Science, or Biomedical.
Our school serves a high poverty urban community.
We are a diverse community of learners coming from many socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds. Unlike students in other under-served communities, nearly half of our students are able to access AP Statistics or AP Calculus by their senior year. We are preparing many students of color and low income students for college and careers in STEM fields. We need these calculators for all students to succeed in AP Math!!!
My Project
My students need Graphing Calculators to be prepared for exams in AP Statistics that will potentially earn them college credit for the course.
My goals for students in this course are aligned with the College Board's expectations for AP Statistics courses. My instruction leads students to: 1) Gain proficiency in accuracy and communication of statistical concepts 2) Become effective interpreters and analyzers of data for given experiments 3) Develop a deep understanding of the four broad concepts required for Advanced Placement – exploring data, sampling and experimentation, probability, and inference.
We need graphing calculators so that all students can meet these goals.
I have great pride in my students and our staff at our school.
The only thing that is lacking here is funding. I've been using the same set of graphing calculators for the last decade and now the buttons are rubbed off! There is no funding to replace this necessary piece of technology and our students do not have the resources to purchase their own. We need this resource so that all students have an opportunity to earn college credit for the course.
