Mr. Smith from Washington DC is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need 8 graphing calculators to perform calculations of derivatives and integrals in calculus class.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
At the end of the school year I want my students to be successful on both the AP Calculus exam while being prepared for the rigors of a college level math course. This will require them to be both familiar and comfortable with technology.
Our school is an urban high school school with a minority population and limited funds/resources.
In our classrooms we have no computer access and only 10 calculators for a class of 18. The majority of the students are not familiar with how to use technology to their benefit. When given the opportunity to use a computer or graphing calculator they will often make more mistakes due to unfamiliarity. The majority of the student body has a desire to due well in school and succeed in their lives. They have just been given very limited opportunities and chances to be great and successful.
With a full set of graphing calculators the AP calculus students will be able to graph functions given to them. This allows them to better visualize what is happening with the function and give a deeper meaning to the numbers. Students will also be able to calculate the derivative of a function and the value of an integral as the year progresses. By practicing with the technology the will improve their speed and accuracy which is vital to success on the AP exam. On the exam students will need proficiency with a calculator to accurately finish the exam in the given time period.
With this increase in technology students will not only be able to cover more material at a quicker pace.
They will be better prepared to succeed in a college level course. They will be able to use technology to their advantage and have the confidence to use it. Also by helping to eliminate small algebraic mistakes they will be more successful with their math courses and less frustrated by small mistakes.
