I need a class set of 10 graphing calculators. The calculators are important for two reasons. First, students are better able to understand and manipulate functions, graphs, matrices, exponents, and trigonometric functions when they can use technology. Secondly, even if students can get through high school without a graphing calculator, they will need to use a calculator to complete rigorous math classes in college. We need to prepare our students for college by teaching them how to use graphing calculators. I need this class set of calculators for a new class I am teaching at Robeson High School in 2005-2006. It is a double period of Honors Geometry/Advanced Algebra/Trigonometry, intended for sophomores. Students who excelled in their freshmen year algebra course and demonstrated superior work habits were given the opportunity to sign up for a double period of math next year. They have chosen to remain in school for an extra period each day, with the understanding that they will be ready to take AP Calculus by their senior year. I found this prospect very exciting because because it offers Robeson students a chance to catch up to their peers at other schools who had the opportunity to take algebra in 8th grade. Most of our students cannot afford to buy graphing calculators (95% of the school is free or reduced lunch). Each student should have a graphing calculator that he or she can take home to do homework and study. Robeson has a few graphing calculators already, but not enough for students to take home. We are working really hard to get our students caught up. They are willing to work hard to learn more math. They just need a few resources.
