My students have been using graphing software in their Algebra I class, but could benefit from having access to a graphing calculator. I cannot justify asking my seventh graders to purchase these expensive calculators, but I want to provide them with access and introduction to this powerful tool
My students are seventh graders in a small public middle school in rural Maine.
They are interested in the newest technology, and many have asked if they "need" a graphing calculator as our new math program refers to the use of a graphing calculator. Most have never seen a graphing calculator, and are curious about how they work and what they do.
My Project
Having access to a graphing calculator will broaden my students' horizons in terms of the tools and technology that are used to do higher level math. This could be a motivating factor for some students, helping to fuel their interest in continuing their math studies in high school and beyond.
USB connectivity will allow the students to use the calculator along with our school laptops to share their learning in class, and perhaps even beyond our classroom.
Donations to this project will put a very powerful calculator in the hands of seventh graders who will likely not have access to this tool otherwise.
The activities book will also help me, as a teacher, to expand the ways in which I use graphing technology with my students.
