My Students

Just as a doctor needs a stethoscope, an algebra student needs a graphing calculator in order to perform the necessary skills to be a successful Algebra student.

I teach in a public high school that resembles most other high schools with one exception.

My students. A high percentage of my students are on the free/reduced lunch program. Twenty-five percent of my students are couch-surfers and over fifty percent of my students come from single parent homes. Due to these 'distractions,' students often do not have the resources to purchase necessary technology that allows for their success in the classroom. The technology I'm referring to is graphing calculators.

My Project

There are 26 Proficiency Standards my students must show mastery of. The graphing calculator serves as a tool for learners, especially low level learners. The use of the graphing calculator permits low level learners to keep pace with the mainstream. The graphing calculator is used to: graph and solve systems of linear functions; graph and compare parent functions, exponential functions, absolute value functions, and quadratic functions; simplify matrices; describe transformations; find equations for linear functions; and create tables.

My students should have the same opportunities as other students.

Having access to graphing calculators allows my students the opportunity to be successful with the Algebra curriculum and successful on our state's Algebra End Of Course Exam.
