Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from high-poverty neighborhoods; many are English Language Learners, but none of these labels change their joy for learning. They are vivacious 5th-8th graders who are excited to master new skills. They support each other in their learning through technology and modeling. I am lucky to have such empathetic young citizens.
Despite the challenges they face in their daily home lives, my students show great perseverance and drive.
Our school motto is "Warriors Always Persevere". My goal is to provide these amazing children the tools they need to persevere and achieve their goals.
My Project
Our Warriors love to browse and borrow books from our school library. Due to our current situation with COVID-19, unfortunately, students have been unable to visit in person but can use our online catalog to place their requests. I deliver requested books daily to our students and see how much they make our kiddos smile.
Graphic novels continue to be a HUGE hit in our school's library.
In fact, they are the most requested books by students. We tend to offer a wide variety of standalone stories and series books which keep our kiddos coming back for more. The novels in this project reflect a need within our collection as these titles are constantly requested. I just don't have enough copies to reach all of my students.
