The students in my high school are curious and inquisitive. They question the world around them, as well as their place in it.
As their librarian, I am proud of their creative thinking and want to provide the tools that they need to develop into life-long learners.
My students thrive on collaboration and are always searching for different perspectives on complex issues. They come to the library to understand learning happens outside the classroom. We explore the world and share our ideas.
My Project
By the time many students reach high school, they feel like they "hate" reading. All too often, they don't actually hate reading at all. They've just been forced to read very specific "classic" books for school.
These graphic novels will help engage readers in many of the classic novels that are "supposed" to be taught in schools, as well as more relevant, current, and engaging stories to hook them into reading.
Graphic novels have updated classics like Dracula, The Odyssey, and The Hobbit to entice high school kids to read some of those classics they never would have dreamed they'd enjoy. There's also great current graphic novels like They Called Us Enemy and the March series to highlight important issues in our American history, as well as engaging novels like Marvel stories and Stranger Things to build connections for students who prefer watching TV or movies. My goal is that every student in my library finds a book they'll enjoy, and adding these graphic novels to my library will help guarantee that happens.
