Graphic Novels to Increase Engagement and Develop Literacy Skills.
My students need a visual library to supplement their core social studies text. These graphic novels present information in a colorful, visual medium, allowing students of all ability levels to engage and explore.
My 8th grade social studies class is full of fun-loving, insightful students with very curious minds. Students learn about the birth of the United States and how it has developed over the last 200 years. My students love exploring new content and examining the country's past.
With 66% of the school's students classed as low income, my students face challenges both in and out of the classroom on a daily basis.
Using these books to engage students with the content and to improve literacy skills would be a magnificent opportunity.
In a world where so much of our learning involves screen time, comics bring something bright, colorful, and different into the room, offering a wonderful way for students to learn. These graphic novels will bring history to the fingertips of my students in a fun, and engaging way. The "Biographical series" will give insight into some of the nations most famous leaders, and the 3 part series, "March" will allow for a great investigation of the Civil Rights protests. All learners love to engage with the material in this format.
This project would significantly increase my students' level of engagement with the core text and allow them to develop stronger and more focused literacy skills.
Students of all ability levels will use the graphic novels to supplement the core text and read as stand-alone pieces. Please help me to add these wonderful books to the classroom, and engage students with history.
