I teach 7th grade English Language Arts at an inner-city school in Baltimore City. My students face a lot of hardships on a daily basis but are extremely resilient. They come to school every day ready to learn, despite many of them reading below grade-level expectations.
My students are funny, creative, artistic, and hard-working.
My students have not always had the best experiences with reading, so I am determined to have them fall in love with it this year with me as their teacher!
In my 7th grade classroom in Baltimore City, I have a wide array of readers. Even though many of my students don't see themselves as readers because they are reading far below grade level, I want them to feel confident in themselves; I want my students to begin to see themselves as readers.
My most reluctant readers tend to gravitate toward the graphic novels in my classroom.
I always tell students that I don't care what they are reading as long as they are reading. Graphic novels are interesting and engaging for reluctant readers because they contain pictures and fewer words on a page, which is less intimidating.
By donating to this project, you would be expanding the number of graphic novels available to my students in my classroom. Your donation could help turn a reluctant reader into someone who sees themselves as a reader!
