Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At W. High School, students can take AP courses if they wish as a part of the Equal Opportunity School (EOS) program. This is a wonderful initiative that prevents the traditional "gate-keeping" that often stops students from getting to explore AP courses they are interested in. That's because traditionally, students must often follow particular course pathways, requiring them to complete a different AP English course to take another. At our school, students take AP Language & Composition as juniors, and then AP Literature as seniors. EOS allows any student who wants to take courses like AP Lit without taking prerequisites.
While this initiative is amazing, it means some students enter the course with less experience and/or confidence.
Having graphic novel alternatives for my students allows me to create a leveled playing field for all students. By offering these as supplements -- they are never allowed to replace their reading with these -- students can borrow the graphic novels (GNs) for a set period of time to help boost their understanding. This emboldens many of the EOS students who are new to AP English to be able to really demonstrate their abilities.
