Homelessness, you never think of it as a child, but I have them in my room. They sit in my classroom and blend in with the rest, but about 1/4 of our school population lives in shelters around the area.
It is an urban classroom, with kids from all socio-economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds.
They come to school enthusiastic to learn, eat, and socialize. They love the stability a school like ours provides in such a hectic world we live in.
I have a small classroom library made up of an assortment of books, but what is always in demand are graphic novels. Students love them! The new I Am series from Brad Meltzer is perfect for those students who would not read biographies otherwise. The other books I chose are those that they are always seeking in our school library but are hard to get.
My students love to read and I want to give them what they want to read.
If graphic novels is what engages them and gets reluctant readers to pick up a book, then so be it. I am in the business of making life long readers, even if they are graphic novels.
