Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 25 awesome third through fifth-grade diverse learning students in a great Chicago Public School. Our neighborhood school is located in southwest Chicago, in a working-class community. The majority of my students come from minority families, who at the present time are struggling financially.
My group of children that are a happy and friendly bunch who are eager to come to school and learn.
In order to help them learn to the best of their ability, their reading materials need to be differentiated to their ability level, but also age appropriate. What better way to learn or improve in our reading then by reading the newest and coolest books out there.
My Project
Using the graphic novel sets of The Last Kids on Earth, The Baby-Sitters Club, and the Harry Potter collection, will allow my students to read some great books and transport themselves to different worlds. In addition, they will improve in their vocabulary, all while being able to see what they are reading about.
Graphic novels will help them visualize what they are reading.
One of the hardest skills to teach a child who has a learning disability is visualization. By receiving these graphic novels, I would be able to introduce the skill with great assistance in a fun and creative way.
