Our student population in Klein ISD is diverse. I strive every day to celebrate the rich cultures and a wide range of backgrounds at our school. No matter how different my students are, they are also the same in many ways because they all have their own personal struggles. I teach sophomore co-teach English, and I believe that each student deserves to see their uniqueness and strengths acknowledged.
Some of them have to deal with learning disabilities or behavior disorders that affect how they learn.
Many of them juggle jobs and schoolwork to make ends meet. Their family situations can range from currently in foster care, to two-parent households, to divorced/remarried parents, to a single mom or dad. But at the end of the day, all of my students need the same things: the love and compassion of a good teacher, and the knowledge that they are seen for who they truly are.
My Project
In the co-teach classroom, many of my students will struggle to read the classic, canonical stories we all know and love. The old-fashioned language can either bore them or make it impossible to understand. By using graphic novels, I can help my students (both with and without special needs) understand these stories better.
Graphic novels are an amazing tool in the co-teach classroom.
They enable all students to not only understand complex stories, but they also help them start on the journey to loving reading. I want all of my students to be able to finish the year reading more challenging novels. With these graphic novels, we can do just that.
