Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what it was like the first time you read a book that you couldn't put down? My fifth graders have recently discovered graphic novels and are OBSESSED with reading them.
Help my voracious readers by supplying their classrooms with new books.
My students are ESL students and are still acquiring the English language. Their reading levels vary, so we need a wide array of levels. My students do not always have the background knowledge to figure out the meaning of words using text context clues. Graphic novels aid them by providing pictures to help decipher meaning and move the story along. Graphic novels help my students build comprehension. Graphic novels use visuals to guide the story. Graphic novels have more complex story lines than picture books and are age appropriate for my fifth graders.
My Project
I have chosen a collection of different graphic novels. The topics and audiences vary for the books. My students are individuals and have a wide array of interests. They are preteen boys and girls about to take on middle school next year. One thing my students have in common though is the love of reading.
Our school has recently implemented independent reading time.
All students are given the time to pick out a book of their choice and read. The students love this if they can find a book that sparks their interest and is their reading level. Please help my students by funding our project!
