One of my goals for my students this year is to introduce them to all sorts of genres. I'm introducing graphic novels to my classes. I know most of you think, "Well they need no introductions, it's like reading a coloring book." I believe there is much to gain from this genre. It appeals to the struggling reader on the surface and when you take a closer look you can see the craft behind the popularity. Graphic novels take on very serious subjects, often delving into politics. Having great books on hand is a way to encourage EVERY reader.
In this age of social media, when I have a student become interested in reading, I view that as a win!
One goal in my classroom is to have books that appeal to the students on hand. I would like to provide students with books that interest and encourage them to read and develop a love of reading. Over the past few years of teaching, I have become pretty adept at helping students chose books that they will enjoy and encourage them to read more!
I'm interested in finding books that appeal to a variety of today's student.
My Project
We have studied a different genre a month throughout the year. Graphic Novels are deserving of the same respect. With the use of these novel sets, I'm hoping to introduce some readers to some fresh or controversial topics, often political in nature.
Graphic Novels often take on topics that are shied away from in traditional novels for fear that it's too heavy or complicated, the "cartoons" help with understanding.
Graphic Novels may look dark and stark, often matching the mood of the adolescent. Graphic Novels match these emotions and give validity to their emotions and confusion around these complicated topics.
