My school is in a small, rural community in northern-lower Michigan. For the most part, my students come from a very low, socioeconomic status. Most depend on free or reduced rate breakfast and lunch, and food backpacks that are sent home weekly.
Despite a lack of resources, they are truly some of the most loving and compassionate students I know.
Every year, in lieu of a Christmas present exchange, my first graders collect and donate presents to a local children's hospital. They are a curious, hardworking, and kind hearted group of children.
My Project
The students in my classroom are currently obsessed with graphic novels. Each week they have the opportunity to select books that perk their interests. Graphic novels are currently doing that, but I don't have enough in my classroom to keep up.
Not only do I want to offer more graphic novels to the students, but I also want to provide options with female protagonists.
I want girls to see themselves in the books that they select, especially when they are awesome, crime fighting leaders. I believe these books will be a great addition and will help inspire children to read more!
