My students from Massachusetts are part of our district's amazing autism program. This program provides social thinking and executive planning instruction and support to students in their home school setting. My students are funny, creative, and smart. They teach me something new every day, whether it's a fact about narwhals or how to "Rick-roll" someone, they always keep me on my toes!
Keeping a child’s attention on their school work can be difficult for any parent or teacher.
My students spend approximately 390 minutes a day at school, that is a long time to be sitting in their hard school chairs. Many of my students have sensory needs or decreased muscle tone, which makes keeping their attention on their work challenging at times. But even with these extra challenges, my students always strive to do their best and use strategies to help themselves stay regulated.
My Project
My students have different reading levels and different interests, but one thing that they have in common is their love for graphic novels! Many of my students don't yet have the drive to read novels for pleasure. Graphic novels are a way to nudge them into learning to read for fun and may spark a lifelong love for reading.
"Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling."(Reading Rockets) This is great news for our reluctant and struggling readers as graphic novels can increase motivation, improve language acquisition and critical thinking skills which can benefit both the struggling reader as well as the advanced reader.
