My Students

The students I serve have a specific set of special needs. Our school predominantly serves students who live in poverty and live in trauma. We serve a diverse population and strive to meet the needs of our students. While our caring staff works diligently to serve these wonderful students, and meet our students' needs, my classroom needs help to be a supportive, welcoming learning environment.

Lynne Rae Perkins has said about graphic novels "There's a lot of freedom with how you can use both images and words, because we think in both ways." I would love the opportunity to give my students the freedom to use both images and words while they are reading.

My Project

Graphic novels have the unique ability to reach children of all grade levels regardless of their reading level. They help bring words to life for children- especially those children who struggle with the written word. These struggles could be language based, learning based, or emotionally based but graphic novels have the potential of reaching those children.

As educators, our goal is to help students find the love of reading.

As a former elementary school librarian, I saw the power of graphic novels for students and want to bring that power to the classroom. I have a small collection of graphic novels and would be honored to expand that collection and give students more choices.
