Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are lively 5th graders who are discovering their reading tastes and what it means to develop their own reading identities.
Our school is located in the poorest community in our state, and access to books is challenging.
Our city does not have a single book store, and our public library is underfunded and operating with limited hours and even more limited resources. A majority of my students are English Language Learners, and they need a steady supply of books to keep them learning. In addition to needing a significant quantity of books, my students need a wide variety of books to support their reading growth and language development.
My Project
My students need 14 graphic novels, like When Fairies Go Bad, and Night of the Iguana, for our classroom library. I strive to provide a balance of fiction, nonfiction, classic and contemporary literature for my students. Graphic novels are an important genre in today's world, and my students need to have access to this genre. Graphic novels are motivating and fun, and also sophisticated and nuanced.
Your donation of these books to our classroom library will expand my students' reading options and provide a necessary element of fun to their reading diets.
Everyone, but especially some of my more reluctant readers, will be able to find something on the shelf to engage them in the all-important act of reading.
