Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are eager leaners! Nothing excites them as much as a game, an activity, or a project.
My students are a very enthusiastic and diverse group of sixth graders.
They come from all over our city from many different elementary schools. They love to talk and write and get involved in different kinds of activities.
Many of my students have special needs, are still learning English, or are concrete and tactile learners. Game play is an exciting avenue for content introduction.
My Project
My students and I are working towards a goal of intense independent reading instruction through a workshop model. Research on how graphic novels can be used to promote instruction in character, theme, setting, and story structure is fascinating. The most important area to me, though is that many students find engagement with graphic novels that they have not found in traditional chapter books.
My goal is to get my students reading as much as possible.
The beauty of graphic novels as used in reading instruction is the scaffolding that can support my English learners through images, and the sophisticated narratives they may not have had access to through typical literature.
