Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is made up of about 225 students in grades PK-12. Currently, 100% of this student population is receiving free or reduced-price lunches. This indicates that our district has a very high level of poverty. The demographic makeup of our school is 39% Native American, 2% Asian, 19% Black, 2% Hispanic, and 39% Caucasian. My classes during the school day include students that participate in the traditional classroom setting including some students with special needs. In the late afternoon and evening, though, my class is made up of students enrolled in an alternative education program.
Over the past two year, we have had an influx of students transferring into our district with special needs.
These students have a wide range of needs and levels of performance. My class is in need of supplemental resources to help facilitate learning in deficit areas.
My Project
This project will provide graphic novels of the classics for my special needs students that correlate with the novels/stories required in High School English courses. This will allow my students to better take an active roll in the general education curriculum and discussions with peers. The stories I have chosen include Jane Eyre, The Stories of Poe, Julius Caesar, and Macbeth. These graphic novels are great because they tie into the general education curriculum, are classics, and will provide visual cues and modified text so that even my struggling readers can understand the story.
Each year my students are also required to read at least two novels and complete book reports/presentations in order to meet state standards.
I have chosen classroom sets of two novels to be used in my classroom for this purpose.
