Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

The most obvious distinguishing factors about my school is that its two single-gender public schools for young men and women, we serve 750 students in grades 6-12. We are a Title 1 school, over 98% are eligible for free or reduced lunch, and lastly, the fact that these are schools in a low economic urban setting only amplifies the importance of what happens inside the school walls.

My young men are struggling and reluctant readers.

The purchasing of Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling.

My Project

My young men are struggling and reluctant readers. The purchasing of Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling.

They also allow struggling readers to have reading successes.

Similar to comic books, graphic novels weave rich, lively visuals with a limited amount of text to drive the narrative. They can be especially appealing to young readers who are reluctant to pick up a more traditional book. Graphic novels are a great way to help struggling readers strengthen vocabulary, build reading confidence and stamina, and develop a deeper appreciation of storytelling

As librarians, we know that enthusiasm for reading often wanes as children get older, so it’s a shock and a delight to see a group of seventh-grade boys running to the shelves to recommend titles to their friends… and then booktalk titles and reserve graphic novels to read after their friends have devoured them! Yes, simple “happy talk” about graphic novels may seem inconsequential but it indicates enthusiasm and a confident reader who will be ready for more challenging material.
