My Students

I teach at a signature school within the Kansas City Public Schools district. It is known for selecting students with advanced artistic ability and consolidating them within a performing arts centered school. My students are creative and thoughtful and need to constantly be engaged with thoughtful lessons and learning environments.

My Project

Recently our school has asked us to give reading time at the beginning of class. Many of my students are averse to reading for fun and so they do not bring their own books to class. I took it upon myself to acquire a few graphic novels locally and let them try them out. This has been an astounding success. In just the first week of doing this I've already gotten several students to pick up real novels to complete stories adjacent to or like the ones they found in the graphic novels. Graphic novels use a conversive style of communication between the characters and leave out a lot of the more complex verbiage which is left to the pictures. I've found this to be an amazing foothold into getting students into reading.

At the beginning of class I have several students fly to the bookshelf to pick off their graphic novel they're reading.

A really great success story has been a student asking to bring one of the novels home and finishing the entire thing in one night. This student told me they've never read an entire book before and they were so excited! The rest of the week they brought their own book and have been reading diligently ever since!

The graphic novels I've chosen here are mostly geared towards history. I want students to be able to digest some of the concepts we're working on in class in fun an interesting ways. I've also included some fun monster books and several comics about racial justice. My hope is that each student will pick up some small appreciation for reading for fun that will carry into the rest of their high school careers and future. Thank you for your donation!
