This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The school I work in is a PreK-8 school with a focus on language learners. These 4th grade students live in an urban neighborhood on the east side of Cleveland. All of the students are eligible for a free or reduced breakfast and lunch. A percentage of my students have specific learning needs. Most do not own any books of their own.
These students love to read fun stories and enjoy reading together with a partner or small group.
My Project
My students need to build reading confidence and learn to enjoy reading. Graphic novels will help visually guide the readers through the text and support their comprehension. The requested titles, The 52-Story Treehouse, The Flying Beaver Brothers and the Evil Penguin Plan, and Lunch Lady are books which are also short and less intimidating to a young reader. These books are great for strong readers too because the story is told in a different way using words and pictures. These novels are also perfect for partner reading for students with different reading abilities. These fun novels will increase the reading in my classroom. The illustrations also encourage discussion and help students learn how to visualize story events and characters.
