I teach special education (inclusion) for sixth grade, and in that grade, students begin to realize their ability levels and where their strengths and weaknesses are. Some become embarrassed that they aren't able to read as much as their peers, and because of that, become discouraged from reading. This is especially true for my students who are special education.
My goal is to level the playing field and build reader confidence.
I believe that starts with obtaining material they both want and love to read.
My Project
These materials will go to my sixth grade special and general education students who are having difficulty with reading on grade level.
Some students want to read but are not on the level of their peers which leaves them without confidence to try.
They've asked many times for graphic novels because then, they too can then enjoy stories like their peers. Unfortunately I, myself, don't have the money to go out and supply them with these books. It breaks my heart to see students who want so badly to read but aren't able to. These are books they'll find interesting and ones that will inspire them to pick up and try new genres and topics as well.
