Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a Title I middle school in Austin, TX. All of my students are considered economically disadvantaged. They face a range of other challenges every single day. The majority of the students I work with have a variety of learning disabilities or have experienced trauma in their lives. My students are kind, hard-working, and amazing. They make me proud every day.
I set high expectations for my students, and I am constantly amazed by their efforts despite the many challenges they face.
My students continue to help me grow into a better educator and inspire me every day.
My Project
One of the things I strive to do is instill a love for reading in my students. I want them to read a variety of books about diverse people. Over the past few years, I have seen students show the most interest and growth in reading graphic novels and culturally diverse novels.
Graphic novels and novel where my students can see themselves are always the most popular.
These novels hold their interests and often teach them things they did not know about themselves. Books like Speak: The Graphic Novel, The Letter Q: Queer Writers' Letters to their Younger Selves, and Anne Frank's Diary: The Graphic Adaptation will all help them grow as readers.
Many of my students are reading significantly below grade level. Having the illustrations in the graphic novels help them to better understand what they are reading and sustain their engagement in the novel. This support helps students to read more and improve their reading level over time.
