Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are energetic, creative, and kind. They love to learn and teach others, and they enjoy reading and writing about books. They are expert researchers, computer coders, scientists, and mathematicians. They are professional kickball and dodge ball players, debaters, artists, and performers. Our school is in East Oakland and serves a socioeconomically disadvantaged student population. The majority of the students are English language learners and qualify for free and reduced lunch. Our school is making great strides to help our students and put their learning first.
My Project
The most effective way to improve reading is to read. The best way to encourage kids to read is with the right books! Like adults, kids want to read the newest books. They want to read the new graphic novels, start a new series, and books that are at their just right level.
My students cheer when we get new books for our classroom library.
They fight over who will get to read the books first and quickly make a list of the order it will go around. I often don't see the books for weeks, as they are quietly passed from student to student each morning. These books, including Princeless and Ghostopolis, will create new excitement in my classroom. I chose new graphic novels by authors that my students already love, and two new series that will help my students get excited about reading!
