I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are a Title I school with many socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and the primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity.
Many of my students are reluctant readers, and I have made it my mission this year to help them find the perfect book that will reveal to them the wonder of reading and lead them down the path to becoming lifelong readers.
My Project
The section of graphic novels in my classroom is the most popular, most perused area of our library. Unfortunately, I don't currently have enough of them, in variety or number, to satisfy my students' demand. But this is a great problem to have! It is music to my ears when a student asks me to "get more books, please!"
These popular graphic novels have the power to reel in even the most reluctant readers, and serve to build bridges to reading success for students who have never before identified themselves as readers.
I would love to expand our collection of graphic novels so that all of my students have the opportunity to choose one of these books during our free-choice reading time.
