Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a seventh-grade social studies teacher for an inner-city school. My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds; some are refugees and some have been in this city for generations. We have one hundred percent free or reduced price lunches for our students.
Both my students and I walk in everyday ready to meet the challenges that we both throw at each other.
They begin each day with their own challenges and baggage. Did they get breakfast? Did their siblings eat and make it to school on time? This is where we meet at eight o'clock each weekday morning. We then must work through all of this and begin our attempts at learning. My goal everyday, is for us to have a place where the students can leave their baggage at the door and learn something new from each other.
I try to include chances for us to be creative, to break up long days of sitting quietly with projects and interactive elements. Each day is a brand-new experience and an opportunity for all of us to learn from each other.
My Project
In my classroom, I teach history to students from a variety of backgrounds. Our biggest challenge some days is our language barrier. Having a set of graphic novels related to our topics helps to bridge that language barrier.
Graphic novels show information in a way that all students can understand.
They do not have to speak any specific language to understand what is being depicted in the books. Having a class set of Marco Polo graphic novels in both English and Spanish would ensure that all my students are receiving the same information. This allows us, as a group, to learn about the same topics in levels that are appropriate to all of the students.
