My students love to read, especially when they're given time and a comfy spot to do it. With so many activities and busy lives, my classroom becomes one of the only places where students can find a quiet moment to enjoy reading. Between Netflix, YouTube, sports, clubs, family commitments, friends and phones, students at this age group rarely make time for reading, so I prioritize reading as an important skill for life. At our school, students can develop a lifelong love of reading!
My Project
My students recently completed a genre study and tour of our classroom library. They've been filling their TBR (to be read) bins and scouring their resources for great books. We've noticed our classroom lacks graphic novels, a genre that has exploded in popularity and quality in recent years.
Our classroom library is lacking graphic novels and students have been eagerly asking for more graphic novel choices.
Students need a variety of graphic novels, including some recent favorites (Speak) and some classics (Frankenstein!) in our independent reading workshop. My hope is that these rich texts will push readers to stretch their reading ability and expand their reading tastes.
