I teach fourth grade at a neighborhood school in an impoverished area in Troy, NY. My students are a diverse group with various learning needs and challenges. We are a Title I school, which means a majority of the students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of our students cannot afford basic school supplies.
It is common to walk into our classroom and see students being self-directed learners who collaborate with one another and preserve through difficult work.
They strive to do their best and even when faced with such adversity show up each and every day ready to give their best effort. They couldn't make us more proud!
The students work hard and are dealing with some challenging situations outside of school. Let's work hard to give them the best education and opportunities at school that we can!
My Project
Having new high interest books will make a significant difference in our classroom. These graphic novels provide reluctant readers with texts that they find very interesting. Our fourth grade classroom is severely lacking good books that students can use to learn how to read. My students are eager to become amazing readers and unfortunately, our classroom lacks the resources to make books available to the students appropriate for their reading levels. Having more texts will allow students to expand their reading and comprehension as well as develop a love for reading. At such a young age, it will make all the difference in the world for these kids to be exposed to quality literature and have the books they need to become successful readers. Thank you so much for considering donating to our project!
