My Project

My students fell in love with graphic novels this year! It has helped to build comprehension and the joy of reading among my Fifth Graders. They take turns reading favorites like Smile, Guts, and Amulet.

For striving readers, having the graphic helps build comprehension.

They are able to read the same books as the fluent readers and have conversations about characters, plots, and settings. This builds a positive self-image as a reader and increases motivation to read, which builds proficiency. Because of the demand for graphic novels, students read at school and at home in order to pass the book onto the next reader.
