We must first understand how our students learn before we can begin to teach them. In my first year of teaching I have learned that each of my students require a different technique to help them learn. While one student needs complete silence, the other needs to have music playing through headphones.
As a teacher you hope that your students go home to a loving home.
For many of my students that is not the case. I have students that are raised by siblings, have parents in jail, or go home to no one. They go home not knowing what the next day will bring. Only wishing to return to school where they know it safe.
I give each student as much love as I have, no matter how they return that love. Many of my students do not know how to appropriately express themselves and end up lashing out. I know that this is the only way they know how to deal because that is what they were taught. Each day I give my students the care they need because each of them deserve to be cared for.
My Project
My students love to read comic books and draw comics to go with their stories. My teachers are afraid of or dislike graphic novels. I am the exact opposite because I love them. I grew up loving graphic novels and studied them through college.
Teaching graphic novels is a challenge that most teachers shy away from.
Because my students show so much love for these kind of novels, I have challenged myself to use graphic novels in guided reading groups. My students have shown increased interest in guided reading group time and independent reading.
Graphic novels may not have words and words to challenge students, but that is not what independent reading is about. Students are challenged in whole group and guided reading group. When they are reading on their own, that is when they have to ability to read about their interests and read for fun. That is why I want to provide my students with as many opportunities to read in hopes that they develop a love for reading.
