I teach third grade in a Title One school in southwest Missouri. We serve approximately three hundred and fifty students, kindergarten through fifth grade. I get to teach reading to all three of our third-grade classes consisting of children from different backgrounds. Most of our school's population qualifies for free or reduced-price lunch, almost ninety perent. Because my students may not have as many opportunities as other children, I would like to provide them with as many good quality resources at school as I can.
My Project
Graphic novels are definitely the preferred type of book for my third graders to read! The format is so great for this age, because of the colorful pictures and fewer words on a page. My students are able to finish an entire graphic novel faster than they would a traditional chapter book and that is so encouraging for them! I love that they feel so successful when they can finish a book! The Chronicles of Claudette, the Hilo Book Series, and CatStronauts would be a great additions to our collection of graphic novels. The more choices they have, the better! I truly believe that having a wide variety of books to choose from encourages life-long reading!
