My students need Graphic Novels to help them grow in their reading skills. Graphic Novels are high interest books that even the most reluctant reader can get into!
My students come to class every day, excited, full of life, ready to learn. My classroom is full of diversity and every day, I am excited for them to teach me something new! I teach at a Title I school in Southern California where many students participate in the Free or Reduced-Price Lunch Program.
My students LOVE reading Graphic Novels!
Over the past couple of years, I have watched the book choices my students make. Many students thoroughly enjoyed checking out and reading Graphic Novels from our school library. My students get frustrated when all of the Graphic Novels have been checked out or the the next one in the seires is not available. I only have a few in my classroom library. I have seen Graphic Novels be the gateway for loving reading and reluctant readers to try new books. I have even had to ask my students to put away thier books so we can work on lessons in other subject areas!
My Project
Having Graphic Novels in my classroom library will give my students more choices in the books that they read, especially when the school library has them all checked out.
Graphic Novels will get my students more into reading, therefore, increasing thier reading skills.
Students will be able to read these books, which are interesting and at their ability level, and improve thier vocabulary and comprehension skillks. I also hope to see a spark in thier imagination and their writing skills. Thier over all literacy skills will improve and they will want to read. I truely believe that these books will help to create lifelong readers!
