Help me give my students a class set of recently published graphic novel versions of George Orwell's 1984, which make the book accessible to English Language Learners and students with varying levels of literacy skills.

My Project

I am a language teacher, co-teaching an 11th grade Language Arts class, comprising students who speak at least eight different home languages. Many are English Language Learners with varying levels of English and varying literacy skills.

My goal is to provide access and to engage all our students, especially English Language Learners, and others from historically underserved groups, by using the recently published graphic novel adaptation of George Orwell's 1984.

Orwell’s 1984 continues to be a relevant read, helping us to examine the role of propaganda and surveillance in today's world. In a Junior English class with a special focus on social influencing, these questions are especially pertinent, given the role of social media in our everyday lives.

The graphic novel, adapted and illustrated by Fido Nesti and published in 2021, will give all students an entry point to challenging topics and the ability to participate in high-level academic discourse.
