My students are amazing and motivated. We are an inner-city creative arts magnet school in the heart of downtown. Every student in our school is introduced to many different paths of arts from sculpture to dance to theatre, creative writing, literary publishing, and music.
Our students are incredibly talented and focused.
We are diverse and dedicated. Our students are artistic and real. Arts are a very real part of our students' identities and purpose. Our students are, quite simply, amazing.
My Project
Our library is brand new. In the past it has been a small, dark classroom with books locked in it. Students could only go in when they were sent out of class to see the behavior specialist, because that's where he was too.
Now our library is a light-filled space for students to read, create, explore, innovate, and learn.
We've moved from that dark, locked room into an open, light-filled space without doors. It is beautiful.
But our book collection is small. Our book to student ratio is severely under where we want it to be, and as a result, we are "short" more than 6,000 books. One of our most underrepresented genres is graphic novels. This collection of books will be a gigantic boost to our collection and will excite some of our most reluctant readers.
All the graphic novels requested here deal with an issue of social justice or an ethical, moral dilemma. These books will introduce students to the ideals of media literacy through a medium they can focus on enjoy. In an era of misdirection and faux news, particularly surround social issues, this skill is vital.
