This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students are brilliant. They are fun loving and they teach me new things each and every day. They come from diverse backgrounds; with families immigrating to the United States from countries include Nigeria, Cameroon, Jamaica, El Salvador, Philippines, and more. Their interests are as diverse as their backgrounds, but one thing they all agree on is that graphic novels are awesome! As a newbie to this genre, I had some preconceived notions about graphic fiction and how it could benefit my kids. However, they have convinced me that graphic novels are the future.
All of the complex concepts that they need to learn, like tone, theme, plot, and character development, are easily taught through the magic of graphic novels.
I will use these materials to offer reading enrichment, create full choice Book Clubs, and to adapt literacy lessons to make them more engaging for students. You can see from my classroom picture, an example of students putting together a Reader's Theatre performance to demonstrate their knowledge of character development in a recent graphic novel we read as a class. I plan to continue these types of lessons with my expanded graphic novel collection.
