My 7th and 8th grade math classrooms are places of hard work and growth. Students come to class and despite their many struggles, they dedicate themselves everyday to improving their math understanding.
I strive to create learning opportunities that push students to have a deeper understanding of the math content.
Together we work through challenging problems, cultural differences, and limited resource access. 83% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch. These students can not afford the typical school supplies. Despite my school's best efforts, we can not always provide resources that students need and are expected to use on standardized testing.
My Project
My students need graphing calculators. Every year we focus on growth in the math classroom. While my students have made huge educational gains over the course of the school year, when standardized testing seasons comes, they are expected to use a calculator they have never seen before.
Students can not afford to purchase their own calculators and my school can not afford to provide them with one.
Currently students have access to a basic function calculator. While this allows them to check some of their work, it does not assist with the advanced abstract concepts they are beginning to learn.
This set of 10 calculators will be enough to give students access to the calculator and the many functions available on it prior to standardized testing. The graphing calculators in class will allow my students to take some of the tedious work out of the problem and focus on the main content. The students will be able to graph a line and check their working using the graphing calculator.
These calculators will give students similar access to resources and opportunities as their more affluent peers in other school districts.
