Grants for Great Ideas: the Many Uses of Weather

Help me give my students a way to explore weather in a way only few have been able to.

My Project

This weather station would be the tool that will jump start the learning process for hundreds of students for years to come. This will provide a way for the students to enable the students to collect real-time weather data.

There are many science subjects that these students will be able to utilize with this tool.

Tools of Science is the first standard covered. (SC.5.N.2.2) with this station, the kids will have the opportunity to

utilize more than just basic science tools..(SC.5.N.2.2)

We would also use this station to cover plants and and animals. (SC.3.L.14.1) How much rain has fallen vs the humidity and current temperature all play parts in the planting process. We will plant seeds to see how temperature and sunlight will help a plant in the growing process.

This will let us move into animals as we discuss how plants are the start of the food chain. Climate, weather and the water cycle are also standards that will be able to researched by this tool, as we will talk about the barometer, humidity, heat index and precipitation levels tracked. (SC.5.E.7.4, SC.5.E.7.3, SC.5.E.7.1) We will chart throughout the year the different seasons starting on week one. We will learn the scientific method and will give them opportunities to explore.

My hope is that this will be used to further develop not only the students that I currently have, but the students that I will have in the future.
