My Project

As a gifted teacher, my self-written thematic units provide students with opportunities to enrich their academics through research, collaboration, technology, creativity, and critical thinking each week. My STEAM centered instruction gained district attention when I was selected as the 2022 Clay County Teacher of the Year. This year’s unit is “Animals and STEAM.”

“Birds of a Feather Flock Together” is a project which will encourage my students to flock together while employing the scientific method and utilizing research skills to study the wild birds that visit our school.

My students are inquisitive and interested in many topics and are especially fascinated with hands-on activities and real life applications. My classroom is near a courtyard, which is frequently visited by several species of birds. By the time my students arrive, most of them have fled, and return once the campus is quieter, eliminating the opportunity for my students to observe them during the school day.

By installing a Smart Bird Feeder to record photos and videos of the birds that visit campus, my students will have the opportunity to observe and study birds native to our area. The feeder records and stores downloadable video and even records audio! With the recordings, my 62 students in grades 1-6 will make observations and collect data each week for the remainder of the school year. Utilizing guides to increase their research skills, they will identify the species of birds that visit our school. The video will allow them to study the songs, eating habits, breeding plumage, and hypothesize about the migratory patterns of the birds in their digital observation notebook. A short survey given at the start and end of the project will show that 100% of my students will have an increased knowledge of our local birds. Please consider helping my flock soar!
