Help me give my students the books they will need to focus on the stories that will allow them to grow.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are kids that come from variations of backgrounds and income levels. However, the majority of my kids are not that well off. And they may not say it, but I know that many are struggling. And this struggle translates into the classroom but I don't want that struggle to continue.
Despite their obstacles, these scholars still want to learn and I still have to reach them.
Thus, I understand that I can't let their personal issues get in their way. I also understand that I can't leave them behind to wallow in the culture of treadmill lifestyles that will leave them running in place. Therefore, I plan on having a project that will increase their love of reading.
These project will make a difference in my students' learning because it allows them to read a book that is from an award winning author dealing with relevant themes. Katherine Applegate is an accomplished writer in her own right and the book Wish Tree covers many themes: diversity, inclusion, acceptance, kindness and the true nature of friendship. Therefore, my students will get a chance to read a renown book that covers important aspects of their lives.
These books will be used primarily in the classroom for reading and IB discussions.
With reading, the students can cover such reading comprehension skills as main idea, cause and effect, prediction, and theme determination. With IB, they can focus on the transdisciplinary theme of Who We Are. These opportunities of growth will give my students the opportunity to be internationally minded students.
