My classroom is composed of a diverse set of 28 first graders. These students have academic, social, and financial struggles. In order to best support these students our school has committed to a looping program. As the first grade teacher, I will start with the students in first grade and follow them into second grade. The hope of this program is to allow the teachers, students, and families to develop strong relationships that will foster academic growth. With this in mind, I am hoping to kick off the new school year with some strategies and supplies that will motivate the students to learn using a multi-sensory approach. It is my hope that we will develop our skills during the first year and we will expand them in the second year of our loop.
My Project
Reading is essential to everyday life. In order to learn to read students need to be comfortable and have a desire to read. I hope to build on this idea through the use of the items I have included on my donation request list. I requested a carpet that will give the students who like to sit on the floor and read, a spot to do so. The carpet has a sport theme, it will offer the opportunity to play learning games as a class. This is key to building a strong classroom and learning community. I have also requested iPad phones. These will be used for students to read into an iPad. This will open up opportunities for families to participate in student learning from home. It will also provide me a chance to see the progress that the students are making while making learning enjoyable.
Creating a safe, fun, and structured learning environment is essential to student learning.
In order to capitalize on this I have included wobble seats on my requested items list. These will offer the students who struggle to sit in traditional seats, another opportunity to move while they learn. I am excited to start a new school year! This project will be an education home run for my students!
