In an urban setting, I often find myself unsure of how to approach instructing "proper" English. Is proper English still alive? My fifth graders could convince many that it is not. Their unconventional use of language, slang terms, and adaptations are accepted and understood by many of the people they encounter. And, until now, I have been willing to accept this as well. However, I have come to realize that there is power in one's command of language. I would not be serving my students if I did not open this door for them. It is for this reason that I would like to start an extensive study of grammar in my classroom. Unfortunately, I am not sure where to start. I am requesting resources to help me construct a grammar unit that will open this door for my students.
