Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at Oscar de la Hoya Animo Charter High School. We are a new college-preparatory school currently serving approximately 350 students from East L.A. in ninth through eleventh grade. I teach art to eleventh grade students. Since this is the first year art has been offered to my students, I am trying to gather art supplies for use in my classroom. I would like to tailor the experience to suit student areas of interest.
I have noticed that my students have a real passion for graffiti. Several students are in trouble for vandalizing the school and/or public property. I want to start a graffiti mural club in which I invite students to design school "graffiti murals" on butcher paper. The club would be open to all grade-levels and I estimate approximately 20 students getting involved. To get the club started, I am requesting acrylic paints, paint brushes, butcher paper, and tape/pushpins (for display).
The "murals" would be used to decorate our stark white new walls and can be changed as often as the students desire. Additionally,the murals can be used at school dances or sporting events to show school spirit.
This project would allow our graffiti artists to get recognition for their art form while providing them an acceptable outlet to express their talents within the school environment. Access to acrylic paint and brushes would help students gain painting techniques other than spray paint. Finally,the club would increase students' sense of ownership of the school, while decreasing the problem of vandalism within the school and community.
