MHS students are a dynamic and diverse group of young people. Our school is one of the most diverse high schools in the state of Oregon. At roughly 34% White, 25% Hispanic, 17% Black, 14% Asian, 9% 2 or more races, and 1% Hawaiian, our school is home to a wide variety of young people. This is exceedingly rare in a state like Oregon where schools are overwhelmingly segregated and white.
Not only were our students pushed into a temporary campus in August of this school year as their old campus gets some much-needed renovations, but now they are being displaced once more to complete their school year at home.
Access to resources varies widely across our student population, and some of our families have found themselves in new and difficult to navigate situations during this time. Families have been faced with issues ranging from the possibility of losing their homes to not having care for their children during the day to not being able to afford to pay their monthly bills and purchase groceries to cook healthy and sustainable meals for all of their young ones that now spend all day at home.
My Project
This project is for our incredible senior class who had to end their high school careers differently than ever before. Unable to celebrate their final year of high school in the way most high school graduates were able to in the past, our students have to re-asses and change their plans in order to keep themselves and their loved ones safe and healthy.
We are planning a way to, as a school, celebrate them and take precautions with social distancing and other state mandates here in Oregon, and need your help to create a memorable experience for our amazing class of 2020!
We need a speaker system to celebrate and announce student achievements and yard signs to post our messages of congratulations. Parents and community members will attend this event. We are excited to celebrate the achievements of our students and wish them success in college and career preparation.
