Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All students are diverse and energetic 5 and 6 year olds in a southern Arizona Title 1, STEAM (science, technology, engineering and math) school.
99% of our students qualify to receive free lunch.
Most are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico and the Middle East. All coming from low-income households, living in neighborhood apartments and trailer parks. School is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. They strive to do their best against the odds and are always excited to come to school and learn.
My Project
These Grade Level Readers and Listening Center will enhance the print rich classroom I strive to create. Adding a listening center will allow a new independent reading opportunity and daily center.
With these new books and audio books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of fiction and non-fiction stories that will allow them to explore and read independently at their own grade level.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow into stronger readers. These books will open my students' imaginations, which will lead to great conversations and written journal entries.
